“Bicycle Culture by Design”: Mikael Colville-Andersen at TEDxZurich

This is a brilliant, eloquent, well-delivered talk about the problems with our urban landscape and how we can fix it. In talking with citizens in my city, I’ve found that just about everyone is interested in making their home a better place—and they all have great ideas on how to do it.

Some brilliant quotations worth mentioning from this presentation:

“Streets now carve up cities like angry rivers slicing through sand.”

“We’re living in cities controlled by bizarre, often outdated mathematical models and equations, impact assessments, cost-benefit analyses.”

“Should we really be engineering something as organic and human as urban streets? It’s the people in a city who define it. Shouldn’t we be studying their behaviour, their patterns and movements, desires and needs, in order to understand how to develop our cities? It worked for 7000 years. There’s a pretty good chance it’ll work again.”
